The difference between spontaneous emissions and stimulated emissions

The terms spontaneous emission and stimulated emission sometimes get confused. The term thermal emission sometimes gets thrown into the mix as well. Here are the basic definitions to help sort things out and the procedures for measuring these parameters.

MATsolutions' insight:

Spontaneous emission and stimulated emission happen one after another and it often gets confused about which one does what. To clarify, spontaneous or stimulated emission is what happens when an atom's electrons drop from an excited state to a lower state, emitting a proton. Briefly put, spontaneous emission leads to stimulated emission, which then drops the electron to the lower state.
